What to expect at your first session
The Assessment Session- Is really a 'get to know each other' session.
It gives the therapist the opportunity to gather important information regarding your presenting problem/difficulty and a bit of background regarding your personal and family history. Most importantly, it gives us the chance to see if we could have a good collaborative therapeutic relationship, as this is the essence of any successful therapy. Towards the end of the first session we make a verbal contract regarding your goals for therapy (at that time), frequency and time of sessions, and our expectations. However assessment can be considered as being an ongoing process throughout the sessions, as new details and possibly further goals emerge.
Sessions typically last 50 minutes. You just need to bring yourself! and if you are covered by private health insurance please bring your membership/claim authorisation number with you.
How many sessions will I need? This is a very difficult question to answer and depends on the reason for you seeking helping. I see people for both brief work (generally 6-8 sessions) and some people for longer term, as sometimes the goals may change during the course of therapy and some people like to continue sessions on a more supportive, monthly basis.
